Niagara University (NU) is a Roman Catholic institution based in Lewiston, New York. The location of its 160-acre campus, near the American and Canadian cities of Buffalo and Toronto, creates an international milieu. It is governed by a 30-member board of trustees, including Vincentian priests.Niagara is renowned as a liberal arts school, with other programs as well. Through its curricular and extracurricular programs, the University prepares its students for positions of responsibility in the professions and in the broader society.Niagara University was founded in 1856 by the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians). It was first chartered in 1861 as a seminary, Our Lady of Angels Seminary, in New York State. In 1883, Niagara became a university for “the instruction of youth in the learned languages and in the liberal and useful arts and sciences.” Each degree program here combines a general education component with a distribution component and a major component.A member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, NU has 2,600 undergraduate students in 50 academic programs. All classes are given by Ph.D.s or professionally qualified faculty members, including Fulbright Scholars, a Carnegie Teaching Fellow, and John Templeton Foundation Fellows.Degree programs have the approval of various organizations; social work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, a program in education by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the department of chemistry by the American Chemical Society. The business programs have the support of the International Association for Management Education.Our Lady of Angels Library, Niagara University’s main library, on the south end of the campus, has an array of services and collections that support everyone’s research needs. Its aim is to give professional care and preservation to the visual arts.Niagara has an active Campus Ministry program, which sponsors a variety of retreats and educational programs for students to develop their spiritual side. Students at the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) — a unit that has been ranked as the best Army program in the nation — participate in regular university classes and majors, and take military science classes during their college careers.
